This is related to equation as balancing requires 2 or more variables, and by the term balance, those variables are of equal value. And to find these values, equations have to be made.

Balance: where two sides of the balance, in this case, are equal and of the same 'weight'

The two sides of the balance has to be of equal 'weight', thus making one side of the balance equivalent to the other side of the balance, even though the variables are of different values. It is the same in equation; one side of the equation can probably be x which is shown to be equivalent to the other side which may show the value of 3.
