Mode

Mode Definition:
Mode is the most frequently occurring value in a frequency distribution.

Advantages:
  • It can be located graphically.
  • It is useful for qualitative data.
  • It is easy to understand and calculate.
  • It can be used for numbers at any range.
  • It can be transfered into an open-end frequency table.
  • It can be located only by inspection in ungrouped data and discrete frequency distribution.

Disadvantages:
  • It is not well defined.
  • It is not capable of further mathematical calculation.
  • It’s result is not based on all the numbers but only numbers that appears the most frequently.
  • Sometimes, the data having one or more than one mode and sometimes the data having no mode at all.

Example: To find the mode of 11,3,5,11,7,3,11
Step 1:Arrange the numbers in ascending order.
       3,3,5,7,11,11,11

   Step 2:
     In the above distribution
       Number 11 occurs 3 times,
       Number 3 occurs 2 times,
       Number 5 occurs 1 times,
       Number 7 occurs 1 times.
So the number with most occurrances is 11 and is the Mode of this distribution.
       Mode = 11
