Data Handling (Bar Chart)

The bar chart above shows the traffic condition outside SST at 7.05 in a typical morning.
(a) Find the number of heavy vehicles observed at 7.05 am
(b) How many more cars are there as compared to heavy vehicles at 7.05 am?
(c) What is the total number of vehicles on the road at 7.05 am?
(d) Is it possible to present the above information using the following charts? Justify your answers.
(i)   Pie Chart
(ii)  Line Graph

    (ii) It is not possible to present it in a line graph because a line graph is used to show data over a period of time but the information given is for a specific time.

    d) i) Yes, it is possible to present this information using a pie chart. The pie chart is more catered for the use of presenting information where it measures the amount of certain things at a time.
    ii) No, it is not possible as a line graph is more for measuring one item over a period of time.

    (d) Pie charts: No, it cannot. Pie charts cannot show that no motorcycles or vans were observed at 7.05am.
    Line graph: No, it cannot. Line graphs are used to show the increase or decrease of something, if the object being tested is constant, it cannot be presented in a line graph.

    d) i) Yes. With the base 25, the number can be easily converted to percentage or degree.
    ii) No. Line graphs are supposed to show something over a period of time but this is only in a specific time.

    (d)(i) Yes. The pie chart will be able to clearly portray the data.
    (ii)No. Line graphs are used to show the data collected over a period of time. Since the data was not collected over a period of time, the line graph cannot be used.

    (ii) No. The Line graph is used to show the increase and decrease in the number of a certain thing. But in this case, it is sowing the number of vehicles at a point of time. Hence, you cannot use the line graph.
